Why is "Humidity" the Silent Killer?
The Science of Friction
Many viewers might ask: "It's just a little mist, why stop?" As a passionate Road Bike cyclist, I (Chewing Brother) completely understand this fear.

For Alex Honnold, the surface of Taipei 101 is made of glass and metal, unlike natural rock which has texture. When humidity rises, the Coefficient of Friction on glass drops to near zero.
This is exactly the same nightmare cyclists face when riding over painted road markings or manhole covers in the rain. On a dry day, it's a safe road. On a wet day, it becomes a deadly ice rink. For a cyclist at 40km/h, a slip means "road rash." For Alex, hanging 508 meters in the air without ropes (Free Solo), a slip means "Game Over."
Climbing vs. Cycling: The Shared DNA of Extreme Sports
From the Vertical Wall to the Open Road
While one fights gravity on a vertical wall and the other chases speed on horizontal tarmac, Climbing and Cycling share the same extreme DNA.
1. The Obsession with "Power-to-Weight Ratio" In the cycling world, we obsess over W/kg (Watts per Kilogram). In the climbing world, it's about finger strength-to-weight ratio.
Cyclists: We shave grams off our bikes and lower our body fat to conquer steep mountains.
Climbers: Alex Honnold maintains an incredibly low body fat percentage to float up walls effortlessly. Both sports are a battle against your own weight.
2. The Flow State (Mental Focus) Have you ever ridden a bicycle downhill at high speed, where the sound of the wind fades away, and you only see the next corner? That is the "Flow State."
In the documentary Free Solo, Alex demonstrates this absolute focus. Fear causes muscle tension and sweaty palms (which leads to slipping). To survive, he must enter a state of pure calm. This is the same rule for high-speed cornering on a bike: "Look where you want to go." If you stare at the fear (the obstacle), you will crash. If you focus on the line, you will glide through.
